CPF Alberta supports Alberta Learning’s Language Initiative

April 22, 2004

“The Alberta Branch of Canadian Parents for French (CPF) commends Alberta Learning for its recognition of the importance and value of second-language learning.  Second language skills are an asset for ourselves, our children, our communities, our province, and our country,” said Rick Phaneuf, President of CPF Alberta.

CPF Alberta is among the stakeholder groups Alberta Learning consulted in developing its Language Initiative.  Through Canadian Parents for French, parents have access to a strong support network to help them give their children the gift of a second language, namely French.  The organization also works at the national, provincial, and local levels to enhance program quality and availability.

CPF Alberta recognizes that French is the natural second (or third) language for young Canadians to study because it is so widely used and accessible throughout our country.  It is also, like English, a truly world language.

“Learning a second language enhances intellectual development, supports first language skills, opens up a wide range of personal and career opportunities, and sets the stage for learning additional languages.  We are pleased that we have been a part of this process since the late seventies and delighted that Alberta Learning is likewise committed to growth in this subject area,” said Phaneuf.

Canadian Parents for French is the national network of volunteers which values French as an integral part of Canada and which is dedicated to the promotion and creation of French second language learning opportunities for young Canadians.  Founded in 1977, the Alberta Branch of CPF involves more than 2,500 members in 31 community-based chapters located throughout the province.
